Lawn Care
I bought a lawnmower. I still laugh saying that aloud. What was I thinking?! I’ve been a homeowner for just shy of three years, and until a few months ago, I didn’t have a lawnmower. We used an app for the last couple of years that I could schedule mows and have the payment withdrawn from my account. Very simple and affordable too. This year as I tightened our budget to really bump up our savings, I cut the lawn care services. I opted to get a lawnmower and I can still hear my Dad laughing when I told him. I bought a weedwacker too. I call it a quarantine skill, but I may keep this going even when the world reopens. Here’s why:
Sweat equity.. You know how it’s recommended to switch up your workout routine? Well, look no further than cutting the lawn, especially if you have a sloped yard like we do.
Cheaper than lawn care services. I’m frugal, like for real. We were spending roughly $400 a season paying a service to mow just the front lawn. I don’t know why I thought the backyard didn’t have grass. There’s definitely grass back there. I spent roughly the same on the lawn mower (corded electric) and weedwacker (battery powered) but I’ll be able to use them for multiple seasons. The entire process of cutting the grass takes me about an hour every 10-12 days. Feels like a savings to me! Normally, I would link the exact lawnmower, but I’m not a huge fan and only want to recommend what I find amazing! The weedwacker works great so check that out for sure!
Accomplishment. The sense of accomplishment I have everytime I pass my freshly cut lawn is indescribable. Mowing the lawn also gives me a similar satisfaction as a freshly vacuumed room. Because I have a cord, I even catch myself reeling back the cord like I do with the lawnmower. Oddly satisfying.
Behavior influences behavior. Just a couple months into the mowing season, I’ve seen new faces (my neighbors) get out and mow their lawns. That’s not to say it wasn’t happening before, but let’s say there are at least 2-3 lawnmowers going the morning after I mow our lawn. It’s either an unspoken competition or we all picked up the same quarantine skill.
Cheers to new skills!
